Motion tracking of an object in Davinci Resolve is very simple to do. It takes only a few clicks to track and stabilize your footage. And motion tracking on your footage is kind of important, especially when you want to centralize your subject. But the main problem is that Davinci Resolve provides multiple trackers for different types of work! So how can I find the best for motion tracking? Here is the step-by-step guide on how to do motion tracking on any object in Davinci Resolve. Also, I give a pro tip so you can do motion tracking much faster.
Adding Tracker
- Select your footage and switch to the Fusion tab.
- Here you can see the media in and media out node. Click the media in the node and press ” Ctrl + space “.
- The toolbox will appear, search in the toolbox ” Planer tracker”. Then, click ‘ADD’ to add a planer tracker to the node track.
Adjust The Tracker Setting
- Click the ‘Planer tracker node and go to the inspector panel. Here, so setting to change.
- First, check the ‘operation mode’ select: ‘track’ option.
- Select the reference time. Move your cursor where you want to start the tracking. And after that, click the ‘SET’ Button.
- This is the important step: go to your preview window and create a box surrounding the subject by clicking the preview window.
- Now go down to the pattern section, and here you need to change two settings.
- 1. Tracker: In the tracker drop-down menu, you can see 2 types
- Point
- Hybrid Point/Area
- Select the ‘Hybrid Point/Area’ for better tracking.
- 2. Motion Type: In the motion type Drop-down menu, you can see 5 types
- Translation
- Translation, Rotation
- Translation, Rotation, Scale
- Affilne (TRS + Shear)
- Perspective
- These 5 options are Work in different types of tracking, and all the types give different types of output. (In my case, I am choosing the translation because my objective is just to change his position, not change the scale of his perspective.)
- Select the needed motion type and select it.
- Now is the time to track the subject.
- In the pattern section, you can see a ‘tracking’ option.
- Track your subject according to the set ‘reference time’.( In my case, I SET my reference time at the start, so I select forward tracking.)
Now, Davinci Resolve tracks your subject. It takes some time according to your Footage and Device specifications.
Stabilize the footage
After you track all the footage, you can stabilize it in just one click.
- Stay in the fusion page and click the Planer tracker and click the inspector panel.
- This time, open the Optation mode Dropdown menu and select ‘stabilize ‘.
- After you click this, you can see that your footage is stabilized.
Transform The Footage
After the stabilization, you see your subject is stable, but your background is still not fit for the footage ratio. To fix this, we need to transform this Footage.
- Now, the Fusion tab work is done, so go to the Edit tab.
- Go to the effects panel and ‘ Grid ‘ and paste into your clip.
- Make a 3X3 ratio of a grid and use ‘ ZOOM ‘ And ‘ POSITION ‘ to fit the background.
- Make sure your backgrounds are perfectly fit to your project ratio. After your background is fit with the project’s ratio, remove the grid effect.
Now you can see, Your Footage is stable and tracking very well.
Pro Tip
- Before you track your object, create a Proxy media of this clip so you can get a fast tracking experience, and your system is not overloaded. ( Check This Blog post here on Proxy Media)
- Select a frame where your object is fully apparent and perfect. IF your objects appear perfect in the middle of this footage, then select this frame and track forward and backward both so it gives a better tracking result.
- Go to the ‘ Timeline view option ‘ ( Just above the timeline, on the left side ) and select the ‘ viewer background ‘ option, and select the ‘ Alert Red ‘ Option. That can help you better find an empty area of the project ratio.
