A Proxy media in Davinci Resolve is beneficial, especially when the system specification is low and you want to work with 4K clips. Proxy media is a low-resolution version of your Original clips! So you can work with your high-level project smoothly. So it’s a great Feature for all Davinci Resolve users.
Some People have a question about “If I use a proxy clip in my project and render it, will the final output be of low quality?” and the answer is ‘NO’. A Davinci Resolve is understand the concept. It will automatically change your Proxy clip into an original clip with Perfect Cuts. So you don’t need to worry about the original clips. But first, we know what all the settings are for creating a Proxy media.
Proxy media setting
Proxy media Resolution and format
- Create and open your project and go to Settings (Bottom Right Corner ) and select master settings, where you find an option called ‘Optimized Media and render cache’.
- Here are 2 settings you want to change: 1. Proxy media resolution, and 2. Proxy media format.
- Proxy media resolution changes your Proxy media quality. It has 6 options to choose from according to your needs and specifications. ( ‘Half’ and ‘Quarter’ are best in my opinion)
- Proxy media format is a format of your proxy clips. In my opinion, ‘H.264’ is the best option for every work.
Proxy Folder location
- In the same master folder setting section, you find another Option called ‘Working Folders’. Here, all proxies are saved in the media folder.
- If you want to change and store your Original clips together, then you want to change one thing more.
Change the Proxy media location
- Press { ctrl +, } to open a Preference section, and here you can find an option called ‘Media storage’, where you can change your Default proxy media location.
- By default, it selects ‘Use Project setting’ changes the option, and selects ‘Proxy Subfolders in media file location’.
- It creates a subfolder with your original clips.
Now all settings are done, and we can create a proxy media.
Create a proxy media
Creating a proxy media is very simple. Just right-click on your High Quality clip and select the ‘Proxy media > Generate proxy media’, and a proxy media will start to generate.
If you have many clips to generate a proxy! So select all of it and then right-click and do the same thing, so all your clips are created as proxy media.
Enable & Disable proxy media
Ok, now we know how to create a proxy media, but now the question is, ‘ How to enable the proxy media? ‘ It has a simple answer. Davinci Resolve gives two ways to enable and disable the proxy media.
- Go to ‘Playback > Proxy handling’, here you can see the ‘prefer proxies’ option, so click it and your Original clip becomes a proxy clip. And you can also disable with the same location called’ Disable All proxies ‘
- The second way is easy. Click the proxy button located near a preview window and select ‘prefer proxies’. You can disable it with the second option.
