Creating a text behind the object effect is very easy to do in DaVinci Resolve. It just takes a few minutes to do. Davinci Resolve‘s Magic Mask is used for this effect. If you use a free version, I will also give you a step-by-step guide to create that effect. Let’s dive into it and know how to do it. I also give some pro tips, so don’t miss it.
Timeline Structure
First, we create a timeline structure and then create this effect in both versions.
- Drag and drop your main video clip.
- Go to the effects panel and search ‘Text’ and add that text layer on top of the video clip.
- Stretch the text clip according to your needs.
- Now edit your text style and font.
- After that, copy a main video clip and paste it on the upper side of the text.
- Now, the structure looks like your main text is in the middle, and the upper and lower sides are the main video clips.
- Now your timeline structure is complete.
Create This Effect in the Free Version
Now we create this effect for the free version also, and if you use the studio version, you can also use this method.
- Go to the effects panel, and in the search option, select the ‘Select All’ option.
- Now search ‘3D keyer in Resolve FX Key.’
- Drag and apply in the top video layer.
- Now select the ‘Open Fx Overlay’ in the drop-down box at the bottom of the preview window layer.
- Now in the preview window, draw a line around the main subject.
- Note: Select the area around the subject. Don’t draw a line on the subject; it might remove your subject border or color.
- If you accidentally draw a line on the subject, you can correct this by using the ‘subtract’ option in the inspector panel.
- Now your effect is complete in the free version.
Create This Effect In The Studio Version
Now we create this effect in the studio version. In the studio version, we use the magic mask tool.
- Select the upper-layer video and select it, and go to the fusion page.
- Select the ‘mediain’ node and press { Ctrl + Space } to open a toolbox.
- In the toolbox, search ‘magic mask’ and add that node.
- In the inspector panel, we have 2 types: 1. Faster and 2. Better.
- (A faster is fast and gets faster output, and a better is slow but gets perfect results.)
- Select it according to your needs. In my case, I use a faster version.
- Now in the preview window, draw a line or add a point on the subject. And then the particular frame’s background is removed.
- Now tracking the subject ‘backwards and forwards’ and waiting for a few seconds to mask out the full subject.
- After the mask out is complete, go back to the edit page, and you can see the effect is complete.
Pro Tips
- In the Magic Mask option, select the ‘Better’ option; it takes a few more seconds, but the mask out is very perfect.
- The magic mask option is a very good tool for masking the subject. I also created a few more blogs on the magic mask; you can read those blogs as well.
